Gord Settle
Yukon Photographer, Companion in the Work of Living with Dementia
“Miles to go before I rest.”
Gord walked his own terrain—camera in hand, eyes open to the quiet language of the land. Snow, trees, distance, stillness. He did not just photograph the Yukon; he inhabited it, and through his images, invited the rest of us to slow down enough to see.
Even as dementia entered the landscape of his life, that way of seeing did not disappear. It changed. It simplified. It distilled. But it remained.
Those of us walking a similar path recognized something in him:
- a steadiness
- a willingness to keep going
- a quiet understanding that the path narrows, but does not end
“Sometimes you just have to let go.”
— Gord Settle, 03 Jan 2016
… There is another truth he shared—just as important as endurance.
Letting go.
Not as surrender, but as a different kind of movement.
Not losing everything at once, but releasing, piece by piece, what can no longer be carried.
Between these two—
“Miles to go” and “Letting go”—
he mapped something real:
We keep going.
And we learn, slowly, how to set things down.
For those of us who remain
Gord’s photographs continue to do what he always did:
they help us see where we are.
They remind us that:
- there is still beauty inside limitation
- there is still distance worth traveling
- and there is dignity in both continuing and releasing
If you have photographs of Gord’s, or moments you shared with him, please let me know so that i can add them.
This page is not just memory—it is continuation.
With his Lewy Body Dementia, Gord was part of our dementia community from the Yukon. I remember his thoughtful presence, his problem-solving approach to daily life, and the way he shared pieces of his journey through both words and images.
All of us leave legacies in various forms. These are links for the projects and pages I have for my friend Gord Settle. If someone knows of others, please contact me so they can be included.

******* SUBSCRIPTION box is now at the bottom of each blog entry. … My own full legal name is Truthful Loving Kindness. My current formal diagnosis is still clinically at stage of “Mild Cognitive Impairment”, altho my Primary Care Physician and several other medical personnel disagree and consider it some form of dementia. Files from my Primary Care Physician (PCP) still say “Dementia without behavioral disturbance, unspecified dementia type”. In the past several years, my PCP, Husband/Care-Partner, and Myself have agreed to quit seeing specialists for further clinical clarification of diagnosis and stage. Specialists are too far away, and the emotional roller-coaster causing stress is not worth it to me. My dementia symptoms are mostly Lewy Body and Vascular types of dementia symptoms, but SPECT and PET scans show my brain damage is currently most serious in the temporal lobes, which creates a lot of similarities with the Logopenic variant of PPA (a subtype of Fronto-Temporal type of dementia). … ******* … Text Copyright © Truthful L.
