BnP 1966 Whitney Lo

“Whitney-Lover”

Was he going to hit me?
I had never been hit by anyone in my life, and wondered
how I would deal with it if he did.

Would I cry and abandon my friend?

Again he snarled, “Whitney-lover!”
He moved closer and I may have shut my eyes
because I fully expected a blow.

Instead he shoved me off-balance and I fell in the dirt of the playground.

I got to my feet, brushed off my dress,
and moved to again stand beside my neighbor
whose surname was regularly considered a derogatory term
in our elementary school

When I think back on his response,
it seems like there was admiration on his face.
I don’t remember anything more happening,
so he must have walked away.
