This Link Legacy is compiled by Truthful Loving Kindness (yes, that is my full legal name) for publishing at http://www.truthfulkindness.com , so PLEASE address any questions or comments to that website, regardless of which website shows these words. *** Along with memories of my two grandmothers’ strategies, i have 3 major “Mentors” for my dementia journey: Harry Urban, Robert Bowles, and Jennifer Bute. Consequently, i have many Links with Robert’s dementia advocacy projects, but sadly, many of those are already broken Links. This page may take a while to load, due to the pictures and nine embedded short videos.
i would like to preface this Listing of Links with some quotes (shared with permission);
Quote from Robert Bowles on 02/25/2015 8:38pm; ” …, I told my family on the day that I was diagnosed in June 2012 that I would be totally transparent and tell the good, the bad and the ugly. I told them that … I would die trying to educate patients, care partners and doctors about medication sensitivity in LBD. Thanks for your love and support.” — Robert Bowles on 25Feb2015.
.
Phil 4:13. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. Robert Bowles said “That ((verse)) sees me through this journey because I know I’m not going to be left alone. I know God’s lifting me up, and he’s going to see me through the journey.” — Robert Bowles on podcast at https://seniorprovisions.com/podcast/the-harvest-show-dementia-advocate-and-champion-robert-bowles/ . ((Have not figured out the year yet, but probably in December)).
Quotes ABOUT Robert Bowles from those living with dementia symptoms:
From Craig Hanke; “When I first started my dementia journey in 2013 I joined a group called Dementia Mentors. Your dad [[ Robert Bowles ]] was assigned to me as my mentor. I soon found out that he was a very special, intelligent, God fearing man that was full of wisdom. I couldn’t have made it through those first years without him. He was my rock and strength. What I learned from Robert, I was able to move from mentee to mentor. I continue mentoring to this day using the wisdom and knowledge that Robert passed on to me. I can’t even imagine the number of people that he touched in life either through his pharmacy or the dementia world. I thank God for him and I am fully confident that he is imparting his wisdom and kindness in Heaven side by side with Jesus!” — Craig Hanke on 30Dec2022.
.
From Laurie Scherrer; “Robert was a fabulous dementia advocate and educator. He was a mentor to many -teaching us how to live a purpose filled life in spite of our dementia. He had a passion for helping others and was always will to share his medical knowledge. Robert was instrumental in starting Dementia Discussions. And Robert was an awesome friend!” — Laurie Scherrer on 30Dec2022.
.
From Mary Radnofsky; “Such a gentle man as well as a true southern gentleman, Robert spoke with magnolia blossoms in his voice and the warmth of the Sun in his heart. I’m grateful for his goodness and kindness over the years, as we travelled on this journey, always striving to be the best version of ourselves through all the changes Life can bring. May he rest in peace.” — Mary Radnofsky on 30Dec2022.
.
From Susan M.;
“His reassuring smile across the computer screen surprised me about 10 years ago, when I first met Robert Bowles. I hadn’t known what to expect. Feeling very nervous, speaking to the first person I’d ever met with the same diagnosis, I could barely speak. ♥
Robert waited patiently for me to compose myself.
“He was born to do this,” I thought. ♥
To reassure. ♥
To create a plan. ♥
To motivate us to raise awareness about Lewy Body Dementia and spread information to everyone that would listen. ♥
Robert was brilliant. His pharmaceutical expertise enabled him to reach out to valuable people across the globe, searching for answers and pushing for research. Robert so struck me, at that first zoom meeting, I knew I wasn’t going to travel down the dark path I was on. There were times I didn’t think I could make it this long- the depression and disappointment was so great. ♥
Robert, and others he introduced me too- made me feel part of a group that genuinely cared. We were all part of something bigger. And we were pulling each other along- positively. ♥
I “ met” his wonderful wife Judy through FB, and he always beamed when recounting when they met, and the joy he got from his family and his faith. So strong Robert was- he helped me believe I could be strong too. ♥
I can make it to the end because of Robert. He gave me that gift. Strength. ♥
Thank you Robert. Never forgotten.” – Susan M. on 11Jan2023.
From Truthful Kindness;
“i have 3 major “Mentors” for my dementia journey: Harry Urban, Robert Bowles, and Jennifer Bute.
They have been my mentors for eight years now.
Some leadership teachings talk about the need for others to expect “success” from you. — Robert never had a doubt in my drive and persistence to my purpose. He usually had a calm “take your time and think it through, girl” attitude for me.
Having Robert in my peer group was also important for his background with pharmacy; When prescribing medications for me, my family doctor would say “Lets consider these medication options. Why dont you talk to your friends in the group and find out their thoughts and how others have responded to these medications and then you can get back to me with their input and we will decide on which medication is for you.”
Personally i think one of the most valuable concepts from Robert that i find myself repeatedly sharing is his concept of ASAP; Acceptance, Socialization, Attitude and Purpose.” (now available at https://truthfulkindness.com/index-persons-with-dementia-pwd/robert-bowles-jr/asap/ ) .

Quotes ABOUT Robert Bowles from Dementia Advocates who are not Living with Dementia:
From (neurologist friend) Daniel C. Potts on 31Dec2022; “Robert was one of the most courageous, beautiful people we have known, as he traveled far and wide (including the American Academy of Neurology meeting in Los Angeles with us) to tell people what it is like to live with Dementia with Lewy Bodies, to advocate for others who are living with dementia and care partners, and to show all of us how to continue living lives of purpose and passion despite the struggles and losses. Now, it’s up to all of us, whose lives have been deeply touched by his, to show the world that personhood lives on, and dementia is no match for it. Rest in peace, Robert.” —D. Think of it: Why does someone not visit a person with dementia? They’re afraid. They don’t [feel they know how to talk with or interact with a person with dementia]. If we reduce the stigma, we’ll see the culture change and the lives of care partners and persons with dementia will be better.” Article is at >> http://health.usnews.com/health-news/patient-advice/articles/2015/07/24/voices-with-dementia-when-do-we-stop-listening .

Quote Robert contributed to 09Sep2015 Dementia Action Alliance document “Words Matter”; “I read an article that women speak about 20,000 words a day and men speak about 7,000. Typically we speak at the rate of 100-150 words per minute. I cautiously showed this to my wife and suggested this might be the reason why I have so many emotional outbursts when she is talking. I asked her to imagine that she was talking to me for one minute and that during that time I had to process and remember 150 words. I would suggest that those without dementia consider having a better listening ear and decrease the number of words that are used in their communication with someone with dementia.”

19Apr2016 Robert shared this news;
“Experts often say that LBD is the most common, unknown disease. Today I saw a new physician.
It is refreshing to visit a physician, and they tell you they are not familiar with LBD;
but, also tell you they are going to research to learn about it.
Today was the 5th time this has happened to me. Each of these doctors practice outside of my hometown.
The important thing is, they are willing to interact and learn from the patients what it is like to live with LBD.
Kudos to them!” — Robert Bowles on 19Apr2016 .

Quote from Robert Bowles on 21May2016.
“Dream, Nightmare, Violent, Exhaustion! What do these 4 things have in common?
They can all be part of the enemy called Lewy body dementia (LBD).
Fortunately for me, they rarely show up at the same time. They took place most of the night.
Several days ago, they came with a vengeance.
This was the worst one I have ever experienced. … ” Robert Bowles on 21May2016.

Three Quotes Robert shared in July 2016 are;
“Be strong because things will get better. It may be stormy now, but it never rains forever.”
((This quote is from Evan Carmichael)).
“Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it.” — Dennis P. Kimbro , and
“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” — Jimmy Dean
.
24Jul2016 Robert said “All last night was a dream starting about 10 PM when I went to sleep. I remember awakening during the night without any realization of my surroundings. Almost immediately, I would fall right back asleep to start the same thing over and over again. I have no remembrance of what the dream was about. This morning I was physically, mentally and emotionally drained. I was sore all over my body. My legs ached from moving and kicking all night long. Fully waking up at 6:30 AM was a relief. I was able to take my shower and go to Sunday School and Church. When I got home, I felt as if nothing had happened. It is so wonderful that those moments fall into the past.” — Robert Bowles on 24Jul2016.

2016Aug17 quote from Robert; “Walk Forward – Go Backward; Parkinson’s Disease is a complex disease. With Lewy body dementia, it is often referred to as Parkinsonism. Sometimes I find the dots and dashes do not connect when I tell my brain that I want to do something.” — Robert Bowles on 17Aug2016

03Oct2016 quote from Robert; “OCTOBER IS LEWY BODY DEMENTIA AWARENESS MONTH
There is a huge need for more physicians to become better educated on diagnosing LBD.
It is important to remember that over 50% of all dementia autopsy reports indicate mixed dementia.
Sometimes there are three or four type of dementia at the same time.
Recently a Neurologist shared with me that Lewy Body Dementia will likely become the number one cause of dementia.”
— Robert Bowles on 03Oct2016.
.
12Oct2016 quote from Robert; “So refreshing to see a TWEET my neurologist shared with me this morning. A resounding YES from me, You can have dementia and still be HAPPY. Throw the STIGMA of dementia in the trashcan. MOST people LIVING with dementia are NOT in the final stage. Early diagnosis is VERY IMPORTANT. At diagnosis start enjoying life. ACCEPT the diagnosis, stay SOCIAL, have a POSITIVE attitude and find your new PURPOSE. You may just be surprised where those four things lead you. Enjoy your FAMILY. Judy Shaver Bowles told Laurie that she wished she had her camera when Laurie starting running to hug me. Almost three years ago, Laurie and I met on a Dementia Mentors Virtual Memory Cafe. We are bonded together like glue. We have struggled and experienced joy together through our journey. We have encouraged and given hope to each other. An added bonus is for us to pray together. If you are living with dementia, go to https://www.dementiamentors.org/ to see what you have missed.” — Robert Bowles on 30Oct2016.
.
2016Nov21 on Defining NEEDS; “Determining the needs of the person living with dementia is necessary to define “Dementia Friendly”. Finding these needs will help lead to more dementia friendly cities. Unmet needs often lead to behavior symptoms in the person with dementia. Establishing better ways to meet these needs will often lead to fewer behavior symptoms and therefore fewer antipsychotic medications. This needs assessment focus groups are being done in Georgia and will be led by a Cognitive Neurologist/Neuroscientist in a major clinic in Georgia. The focus groups are being made possible by sponsoring grants from Dementia Spotlight Foundation and United Against Dementia.” — Robert Bowles on 21Nov2016

Robert Bowles’ quote 14Dec2016; “I’m glad I had an opportunity to see each of you today because I am not able to get on as much as I used to. But each of you mean the world to me. I am thankful for this time of year and what it means to me. I want to wish each one of you a Merry Christmas, and at the same time I want to tell you that each of you have had a huge impact on my life.
When Dementia Mentors was started I talked to Gary several times, because I didn’t know whether I wanted to participate or not — I was still struggling some. As it turned out, I did. I was on the inaugural café and it changed my life. It set the foundation for me doing as well as I am because of the socialization I received, and the impact that each of you have had on sharing your journey with me. So again Merry Christmas, and I hope each of you have a great Christmas.”

2017Mar31 Robert was with Teepa Snow and Lauren speaking at Due West UMC in Marietta, Georgia. Robert said “Lauren shined like a bright light as she interacted with Teepa Snow on stage … Lauren slipped up from behind me. We embraced and latched on to each other. Lauren and I met about 3 years ago at a Dementia Mentors Memory Cafe. She was diagnosed with LBD about 2 years after me. Lauren was a Board Certified Neuropsychiatric Nurse. Every month she travels to a Teepa event and interacts with Teepa. This enables the audience to gain 1st hand knowledge of someone living with dementia. Up to 80% of people Living with Lewy will experience this. A few nights ago, I experienced 37 episodes of restlessness. As I awakened my legs felt weak and useless. Sometimes, I will experience nightmares, visual and audio hallucinations, and REM Sleep Behavior Disorder in the same night. I’m able to bounce back because my Lord Savior quickly calms the storm.

2023Jan03 has posting from Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA); “Robert Bowles, diagnosed with LBD in 2012, was an immense source of inspiration and support for many in the LBD community. Robert never let Lewy dim his light and encouraged others living with this disease to stay positive amidst their diagnosis, finding ways to advocate for and give back to the community with a passion that was unmatched, and utterly heartwarming. We are deeply saddened to hear of his passing but know that his memory will live on in all of us as we continue our fight against this terrible disease. ” — LBDA. … with some photos attached at https://www.facebook.com/LewyBodyDementia/posts/pfbid0DXKpxVnEdFvmdwu81rdfqtUHxnoss7htecfADkPZh4d4mQhSQmHSyQXjT8TpHFaLl .

Memorial Fund: Ashley noted “”We asked in lieu of flowers that donations be made to help dad’s neurologist with his ongoing dementia related research. Dad’s mission in life these final 10+ years was to change the world of dementia—-to equip care partners, to show persons living with dementia that they still had purpose, and to one day help find a cure for dementia.
