Embraced within Fear

A tropical storm can be beautiful, but also very scary, when all the elements unleash themselves at the same time, which can have an adverse affect on the dementia mind causing even more disorientation, so please if you’re taking care of a person who has dementia when you have storms in your area be understanding.

I wrote this with my dear almost 4 year old granddaughter in mind as she is terrified of our tropical storms as much as I am

“Embraced within fear”

I recoiled tense into my chair, fraught within fright,
As a furious storm unleashed all of its might,
Every clap of thunder making the walls vibrate,
Every lightning flash, brighter than dawn doth awake,

Torrential rain pounding upon shelter of roof,
Became a copious waterfall descending on earth,
As it gushed to ground forming meandering streams,
Seeking babbling brooks for its severity to appease,

The thunderous storm was awakening my inner fears,
Whence a ray of delight in the doorway did appear,
Gliding across the floor with more grace than a swan,
Yet arms stretched out for solace, from her own anxious alarm,

I cradled her in my arms and wiped away the tears,
For the heavenly wrath was her first encounter with such fear,
Yet confusion in her face spoke more decibels than the storm,
As her soft hands squeezed my nape I could only weep forlorn,

Perplexity reigned… wherein my own confusion dwells,
How to comfort my granddaughter, of what’s my stormy hell,
So I caressed her with tenderness to appease infant mind,
But she lovingly kissed my cheek, as a please don’t cry…

Surely life hath no more beauty than a child within arms,
But it also holds more terrors that we cannot pre-foretell,
Yet when the confused and young life embraced their fears,
They conquered a storms depth, whence their fears disappeared…
