An ‘Unacceptable Rude Word’

This entry from retired doctor Jennifer Bute, shared 02Dec2022 on FaceBook.

My daughter pointed out to me recently that I had used an ‘unacceptable rude word’ to her in an email about something. Whoops! I was appalled at myself. I had not realised and wondered if this phrase was beginning to apply to myself: “Are the hinges coming off the door?”

.

As we grow up we hear many swear words which we find are ‘unacceptable’ and these get shut away in the brain in a ‘locked room’ section, not so much with a ‘No Entry’ sign on it but with a ‘No Exit’ sign. As Dementia progresses I say the door tends to ‘come off its hinges’ and these words and phrases leak out again, as can other ‘socially unacceptable’ behaviours as I have described before. I have seen and heard other people with Dementia showing signs of ‘leaks’ in what is or what is not socially acceptable.

.

I am so grateful I have a family that keep me accountable! … I will try harder to keep the door shut!
